Microfiction Day 159 – ‘Fear of Flying’

She wasn’t born afraid.

As a child nothing phased her. She repeatedly threw herself off the top of the climbing frame as her mother watched in horror from the kitchen window. She cycled as fast as she could through the village streets before lifting her feet from the pedals and wriggling until her stomach was on the saddle.

She liked to feel like she was flying.

But at sixteen, when she heard the explosion as the bird hit the window and ran downstairs to find it already turning cold on the patio, she felt fear turn her bones to glass.
