Microfiction Day 212 – ‘Authenticity’

She felt a hand on her shoulder.

“Are you ok?”

She drew a thumb across her eye. Flicked away the emotion that had settled there. Sat up straighter and smiled an inauthentic smile.

“Of course I’m ok.”

She sat down on the bench next to her and looked out at the duck pond that neither of them were really seeing. “It’s ok to not be though, and to show that you’re not.”

A humourless laugh. “No one needs to see that.”

“Maybe they do. Maybe you’ll give them the power to open up.”

“I never thought about it that way.”
