Microfiction Day 184 – ‘The Masks We Wear’

“Why do you always wear red lipstick?”

She smiled, her teeth perfectly white but a little crooked, making her look beautifully approachable.

“My grandmother always told me that no matter how tired you are, you should always wear a bright lipstick. That way everyone looks at your mouth and not at your eyes.”

“That’s clever. What would they see if they looked in your eyes?”

The question caught her off guard. “They’d see the three hours of broken sleep. They’d see the worry about my children, my parents. Of everything really.”

A yawn escaped as the red-lipped smile faltered.
