She hadn’t been herself. She had felt her battery depleting, the effort of getting dressed taking three times as long as it should have done.
She tried to explain it to her mother.
“Do you feel like the lights have gone out?”
She shook her head. “Not quite. That makes it sound like they can be turned back on again. I feel like all of the light has escaped.”
She could see it in her mind’s eye. The radiance leaving her body in one heavy sigh.
Her mother grabbed her hand. “The embers are still there. We’ll start a fire together.”
