Microfiction Day 72 – “The Measure of Happiness”

“You seem sad.”

He looked up and tried to bring some brightness into his eyes.

“I’m ok. Honestly.”

She broke into a grin. “Good! Because I’m great. Amy called and we made up.”

He let out a large breath and his grin matched hers. “That’s great news sweetheart. You’re still grounded though.”

“I know. But is it ok if I see Amy tomorrow?”

“Of course.”

His heart felt impossibly light as she ran upstairs. He had always absorbed the feelings of his children and worn them like a weight.

He could only ever be as happy as his unhappiest child.
