Microfiction Day 56 – “New Beginnings”

“Do I have any running shoes?”

“Check the cupboard under the stairs.”

Dread filled his stomach. He hated that cupboard. The little horror shop full of past failures. The cycling cleats that saw him topple into the elderly woman at the bus stop. The water shoes that spent more time on his feet in the water than on the paddleboard.

He didn’t like to think about the skateboard.

He opened the cupboard. It was empty except for a brand new pair of running shoes.

She came up and kissed him on this cheek. “This will be the one that sticks.”
