Microfiction Day 50 – “Christmas Day”

The sand moves beneath her feet, two pairs of socks feeling tight against her boots.

“It’ll be worth it, I promise.”

He holds her hand, thick gloves muffling each other’s touch.

They’ve left the turkey cooking. “Just 5 more minutes, then we’ll go back.”

His breath fogs, droplets in his beard. He smiles and the skin by his eyes crinkles.

“They’re here! Look!”

The murmuration explodes into the bright blue winter sky, thousands of wings dancing to the same swooping beat as if they can hear her heart. She grins up at him, tinsel-eyed.

“Thank you.”

  2. LOVE this and I LOVE Starlings murmurations. People travel for and side to see this on the Somerset Levels in Sept. It’s mesmerising to see.
